The reference: the app
The rules described on this site are those of the Tap Tap app, read from its code: modes, delays between colors, allowed delay, sequence length, grid sizes, score calculation. When the in-app help and the code differ, the site follows the code.
Sources consulted
- Reaction time (new tab) (Wikipedia): what a reflex game measures: the delay between a signal and the response (Follow mode).
- Memory span (new tab) (Wikipedia): the length of sequence you can remember at once, and the benefit of splitting it up (Memorize mode, Strategy page).
- Working memory (new tab) (Wikipedia): the memory that holds a sequence while you replay it.
- Mental chronometry (new tab) (Wikipedia): the history of measuring reaction times.

How the examples are verified
Before each publication, two independent programs redo all of the site's calculations:
- a tool connected to the app's engine, without modifying it, plays each example game like a player: it lets the app draw the colors, taps the right tiles and records the delays and score calculated by the app;
- it checks, over 2,000 draws, the color of the tiles and the sequence length of each round;
- a second, separately written program redoes the draws, delays and points, and blocks publication at the slightest discrepancy.
